A blog post discusses a back-up methodology that will archive data for at least 2,000 years and potentially 10,000 years. The post discusses how technology will advance, and that using today’s technology, such as CD-ROMS and DVD’s will present backwards compatibility issues.
Reading this blog entry, I thought about something I read on Slashdot about a year ago. A reference to an article that discussed whether or not technology has too much memory. It explored whether society should just be able to forget some things, and what the ramifications of a permanent memory are.
Frankly, there are things I would like to forget. Not everything should be archived. This is a discussion that really needs to happen — not only within the IT community, but within all communities of practice.
